Instructions for
Removal and Installation of
Interface Display for Ensoniq SD1 Synthesizer Music Workstation: |
 |
|
Preparation: Installation Time, Tools Needed, Overview |
- Time required: about 15 minutes.
- Tools needed: Phillips Screw Driver and Allen Wrench
- Overview: Remove old interface display card, and install its
replacement
- Be sure your synthesizer is
unplugged before beginning the process.
|
|
Directions |
|
Step 1: Using an Allen wrench, remove the four screws holding the top
down. (The locations of the four screws are highlighted in yellow below.)
Also, remove the two data entry slider knobs on the top of
the keyboard. They just snap off, and then back on after you're done
reinstalling. In the photo below, the data entry slider knobs are on the
left side, just between the upper yellow arrow and lower yellow arrow. |
|
 |
|
Step 2 (shown below): Lift up on the hinged top of the
SD1's shell. You will need to apply some upward pressure to "unsnap" it from
its position.
Note: You should find that the interface display circuit card is shielded by a piece
of brown card-like paper stock. (It is this way from the factory.) |
 |
 |
|
Step 3: Disconnect the interface display's two connection cables.
Take note: Pay attention to how the attachments were before disconnecting
them. They can only attach in one direction. These cables provide all the power and communication buses to the interface
display (the cables are shown below). You will need to reattach them in just
the same manner as they were before. |
 |
 |
|
Step 4 (optional): You can choose instead to use the replacements
for the two cables. In other words, you can either reuse your existing cables
(disconnect them from the old display, at the connection points seen above),
OR remove your existing cables and use the replacements. To do that,
disconnect the old connection cables from the mother board, at the
connection points seen below. |
 |
 |
 |
 |
|
Step 5: Carefully remove the old interface display, from within the
inside of the unit:
-
With a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew all the black screws
that are holding the brown/tan colored heat shield and the display circuit card up
in place. Save the screws to reinstall with. (In the photo immediately above
and to the left, three of these blacks screws are visible. There are more.
Remove them all.)
-
Carefully pull out -- straight out -- both the circuit card and
its brown shield/card.
-
You will begin to note some tube-like protrusions on the old
card (with "light tips" or LEDs
at their tops) that had been positioned with their LEDs right inside of
certain buttons on the shell. Whenever you install the replacement, those
same LED protrusions on the replacement card, will need to be
aligned properly, right "into" the same buttons they're made to light
up. It is not too difficult, but you must pay attention to make sure the
replacement card is going into the right position, with regard to these LEDs.
Step 6: Finally, reinstall with the replacement: Now, reverse the whole process,
and then you're done! Align the replacement card (together with its brown
shield-card), and carefully slide it all into place. Then, screw in the
black screws again, to hold it all in place. Attach the cables that provide
power and communication. Make sure they're firmly attached to both the
replacement card and the motherboard. Close the lid. Screw in the four top
screws and tighten them with the Allen wrench. Turn the unit on and test the
replacement display. |
